UN-ECO coop. resolution adopted

TEHRAN, Nov. 23 (MNA) – A special resolution on cooperation between the UN and ECO was adopted by consensus at the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday.

Iran’s Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Gholamhossein Dehghani, while introducing the resolution at the 71st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, said “the ECO region with its ten members from the Western Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus, connects Europe to China, and Russia to the Persian Gulf.”

“On the other hand, through its performance on the international level, it has led to the execution of global agendas across the ECO region,” he added.

Dehghani deemed regional cooperation the dominant paradigm in the current international relations, adding “cooperation among neighbors and countries situated in the same region within the framework of regional mechanisms such as ECO, can work toward economic development and promotion of prosperity for the people.”

The Iranian UN envoy further stressed that ECO, since its establishment, has been able to expand regional and international cooperation with a focus on economic and non-economic transactions among its Member States.

The Islamic Republic of Iran as the rotating president of the Eco Council of Ministers was in charge of the negotiations on this resolution in the 71th session of the United Nations General Assembly. The resolution was finally adopted by consensus on Tuesday after about two months of negotiations.
